a falcon. a hawk? no, i think it was a falcon. yeah, it breezed into the bus waiting shelter, scaring the bejesus out of a few unlucky pigeons. i thought it was a seagull at first due to its speckled nature, but then i realized it's face was much too noble to be a seagull. really, it was like a burst of the discovery channel that disappeared among cnn and the style network. i have to say it's a sad day when a falcon has to rummage through pigeons and other urban vermin in order to snag a meal. i found it worth mentioning nonetheless.
this weekend was glorious in that spent too much money, walked too many miles sort of way. julia and i spent our friday off--which was well needed, i must say. since last weekend was spent regurgitating (thaaanks for the three bottles of wine, yuko), i didn't have a chance to really relax. so friday was for that. then saturday, we decided it was time for a downtown excursion. the weather has caused us to avoid downtown, so when the weather widget screamed "50 degrees!", we were like "hells yeah! off to lechmere!" so we took the squeaky green line to newbury street and went vintage shopping. i found an amazing spring dress, circa 1950s-1960s--only bad thing about it (despite the initial grandma gown groans) is that it's completely see through, so i'm going to have to fix that somehow. we then ate hamburgers and cruised the public library. the boston public library is akin to entering another time period--pure marble, busts of obscure historical figures, and rich deep colors. original paintings gracing the walls and green lamps lighting up an otherwise brandy tinted room. i felt immersed in knowledge and wisdom, surrounded by books older than our country and walking a floor that's been frequented by a founding father here and there. oh i am in love, i am. i need to go back and nestle in a corner with mansfield park in order to get a head start on my jane austen class come autumn.
anyway, post fabulous library experience, we then went home, cleaned ourselves up, and headed back out to a tiny cafe restaurant called cafe luna in central square. with a crispy basil and tomato pizza in front of us, we sat back and listened to live jazz flit through the air. i suppose jazz would bounce, not really flit. bounce and bop and scat and scadoo. the place was teeny weeny, so the music wafted and waved, filling up the entire room (i say room, because really, that's what it was) with brassy timbre and colorful notes. we were enveloped and we loved it. after a bit of gelato and decaf, we headed back on the red line and wrapped up a lovely day.
then sunday was spent at a bakery/cafe called mariposa bakery where we ate plum tart and worked on our portfolios. i took out one of my headphones to relish in the conversation an australian man was having to my right. i'm always so baffled by the australian accent because it's one i can't possibly recreate despite the closeness of it to my own accent.
on a totally different note--something worth checking out. the ny times has an amazing editorial on great performers and the photographs are breathtaking. so check it out, because it's full of beautiful images and an unconventional way of seeing performers.
so dan got me hooked on this band called "breathe owl breathe." they're quite folksy, but they have some depth that lacks in the general folk type band. there's a raw quality with limited instrumentation and honest lyric. sometimes the vocals can be a bit too raw for me, but generally i appreciate how it complements the genre. they're from michigan and you can really feel the cold and the wind and the rustic setting. anyway, i adore them and i hope you do too. the songs are from the album canadian shield, which is an older album. they have more recent ones, but this is my personal favorite.
breathe owl breathe: your cape
breathe own breathe: shovel
wow, that was an insanely whirlwind post. maybe next time i'll be a little less all over the place.
